Drone-Based Traffic Measurements

Aerial Traffic Observation provides reliable data for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Traffic conditions, driving profiles, and interactions are recorded from a bird’s eye view—as a basis for planning, simulation, and the development of automated driving functions.

From an altitude of around 200 meters, multicopters record traffic conditions over an area of around 500 meters without influencing the flow of traffic. The measurement is therefore non-invasive and suitable for inner-city main roads as well as complex intersections.

Data Collection and Analysis

Data analysis includes detection, tracking and trajectory formation of vehicles with derivation of speeds, acceleration, lane assignment, turning relationships, and time gaps. 3D bounding box detection based on monocular 3D object recognition allows separate viewing of the tractor and trailer. Aggregated key figures are available for simulation, impact analysis and reporting.

Sample Measurement and Key Figures

A typical example from a 30-minute measurement on a main inner-city road shows the magnitude of the data obtained: approximately 1,350 vehicles, cumulative driving time of around 41 hours, and driving distance of around 530 kilometers. This data density enables reliable statements to be made about capacities, traffic jam patterns, and the effects of different control variants.
